We had a flock of White-Crowned Sparrows feeding in our backyard on a daily basis for the past few months, then suddenly, without warning, they disappeared overnight. It's been about a week and I haven't seen a single one in the yard since their sudden departure. It's my understanding that they head for cooler climes at the end of April, wisely getting out of the valley heat until it cools again in the fall. We'll miss their entertaining antics, but I can't say I blame them for escaping the heat. I'm sure I'll be wishing I could do the same in a few weeks!
