Obviously, I’m a rank beginner when it comes to identifying birds. It just recently dawned on me that we have both Lesser and American Goldfinches at our feeders. Our initial flock was certainly only Lessers, but over time we’ve had a small number of Americans show up in the mix. It took me going back and carefully looking through my photos to see that the Americans were there from nearly the beginning, but only less frequently and in smaller numbers. Now I know how it must have felt to be a neophyte gold panner back in the day; it’s certainly easy to be fooled by these little gold nuggets!
